Brother, Worker, Soldier

By September 3, 2017 Message Notes

(Philippians 1:27a NLT) Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ.

(Philippians 3:17) Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.

(Philippians 2:25-30 NLT) Meanwhile, I thought I should send Epaphroditus back to you. He is a true brother, co-worker, and fellow soldier. And he was your messenger to help me in my need. (26) I am sending him because he has been longing to see you, and he was very distressed that you heard he was ill. (27) And he certainly was ill; in fact, he almost died. But God had mercy on him—and also on me, so that I would not have one sorrow after another. (28) So I am all the more anxious to send him back to you, for I know you will be glad to see him, and then I will not be so worried about you. (29) Welcome him in the Lord’s love and with great joy, and give him the honor that people like him deserve. (30) For he risked his life for the work of Christ, and he was at the point of death while doing for me what you couldn’t do from far away.

  1. Be a brother

(1 John 3:16-18 NLT) We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters. If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person? Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.

  1. Be a worker

(Philippians 1:5 NLT) for you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now.

(Philippians 2:2 NLT) Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose.

(Ephesians 2:10) For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

God has given us the church a great mission … the mission requires a lot of work!

This is amazing work!

Work which God equips and empowers us to do.

But we all have work to do!

  1. Be a soldier

(Philippians 1:27 NLT) Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ. Then, whether I come and see you again or only hear about you, I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News.

(John 1:12 NLT) But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.
