Overflowing in love

By February 10, 2019 Message Notes

(John 7:37-38 CSB) On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. (38) The one who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him.

(John 13:4-5,12-15 NIV) so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. (5) After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. (12) When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. (13) “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. (14) Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. (15) I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

The story: what equivalents today?
-It was an ordinary act of service in their culture – but not from a leader.
-It was a once only experience – not to become a weekly event (ceremony), but a memory to treasure, an example to follow.

1.Love is shown in many ways
5 Love language. — Gary Chapman.
-words of affirmation
-physical touch
-receiving gifts
-quality time
-acts of service

2.Love washes off dirt (not adds to it)
(1 Corinthians 13:4-5 NIV) Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. (5) It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

3.Love is consistent
(1 Corinthians 13:6-7 NIV) Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. (7) It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

4.Love initiates – He first loved us
Love starts a reaction, then a movement.
(Romans 5:5 NIV) And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

(John 3:16 NIV) For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
